Ethel Westlund

Ethel (Anderson) Westlund, age 101, of Tonasket, WA died on September 1, 2016 at North Valley Extended Care in Tonasket Washington. She was born December 4, 1914 in Anoka, Minnesota to August and Hilma Anderson.

Ethel was the thirteenth of 15 children who all worked on their family farm in Anoka, Minn. She worked at the Anoka Insane Asylum at age 14 for a few months, then moved to Minneapolis to work at Jones-Harrison Convalescent Home for several years. She married Arthur Westlund, June 7, 1938. They had an infant daughter in Anoka who died hours after being born.

She and Art moved to San Diego in the early 1940s where daughter, Arlene, was born in 1943 and son, Gene, in 1944. Ethel helped Art in the Roslyn Cafe which they owned during the war in San Diego. In 1948 they moved back to Anoka where Mom worked side by side with Art at their “Night O Rest Motel” until their return to San Diego with two teenagers. Ethel was always involved as a helpmate in the numerous motels and Tastee Freeze they owned in the San Diego area.

Ethel loved children and always had hugs and candy for any she saw. She was actively involved in church activities and enjoyed going out to lunch with her circle of lady friends. She often prompted Art as to who needed financial assistance individually or as a mission. Her life exemplified Christ in love and giving. In 2003 she and Art moved to Tonasket where they lived at North Valley Assisted Living before moving to North Valley Extended Care 4 years ago.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Arlene Johnson, of Tonasket and son Gene Westlund of Twisp, Wash.; grandchildren Brendalee Johnson, Cathy (Matt) Abplanalp, Aaron Westlund, Jennifer (Beau) Chambers, Josh (Michelle)Westlund, Rebekah (Eric) Trevino; great grandchildren Anders Johnson Foster, Olivia and Reuben Abplanalp, Reese and Hadley Westlund, Hudson and Beckett Chambers and Gabriel and Ezra Trevino.
