CHELAN – In the last league match before districts, the Tonasket wrestling team lost to Chelan, 46-27 on Thursday, Jan. 29.

At 160 pounds, Kevin Cruz won his match by decision, 9-0. Sophomore Keegan McCormick won his match at 171 pounds by a technical fault, 17-1. Senior Trey Jensen won by a pin at 135 pounds.

“The match with [McCormick] was the highlight because the other guy had a pretty good record and we were expecting a pretty close match,” Dave Mitchell, head coach, said. “[McCormick] just dominated him and beat him by a technical fault.”

On Friday, Feb. 6, the district tournament begins at Chelan High School. All Caribou Trail League schools will be in attendance. Districts start up again on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. and finals begin at 6 p.m.

“The big thing now is to get ready for districts,” Mitchell said. “The top six qualify for regionals and we want to get our guys to qualify.”

On Thursday, Jan. 22, Tonasket wrestled at home against Okanogan, winning 35-30. At 140 pounds, sophomore Lee Leavell beat sophomore Jovan Lopez by a pin. On Friday, Tonasket wrestled their make-up match against Cascade at Cashmere High School, winning, 16-0.

“Cascade only had four guys,” Mitchell said. “The final score was 16-0 because I didn’t take a bunch of forfeits and run up the score.”
