On Tuesday, March 17 the team competed in their jamboree in Omak against Omak and Okanogan.
“Being a jamboree, each athlete could only do two events,” Bob Thornton, head coach, said. “It was a good way to start the season. Everyone competed really well despite having the first meet jitters.”
In the men’s 100 meters, sophomore Kellen Sauer placed second at 13.11 with junior Terrell Cross placing third at 13.43. In the men’s 400 meters junior Spencer Podkranic placed second at 1:03.09. In the women’s 400 meter, senior Christina Ortiz finished in third place at 1:22.16. In the women’s 800 meters, sophomore Jessica Spear finished in first place at 2:50.02.
In the 1600 meters for the men, freshman Damon Halvorsen placed third at 5.29 with junior Corey McCrarey coming in at 5.39. In the women’s 1600 meters, sophomore Michelle Carlson finished in second place at 6.29 and freshman Amy Johnson finished at 6.48.
In the women’s 100 meter hurdles at 33 inches, senior Teriqua Cholmondelely finished in second place at 18.96 and freshman Vanessa Martinez finished at 27. In the men’s 300 meter hurdles at 36 inches, Podkranic placed first at 55.68 while sophomore Trevor Jensen finished in third at 64. Freshman Shelby Scott finished in fourth in the women’s 300 meter hurdles at 30 inches with a time of 68.5.
In the men’s four by 100 relay, Sauer, Jensen, Jake Hickman and Cross finished in second place with a time of 54.97. In the women’s four by 100 relay, Ortiz, Brandi Wilson, Martinez and Amber Kilpatrick finished in second place with a time of 67.41. In the women’s four by 200 relay, Cholmondelely, Elizabth Cleman, Johnson and Spear finished in second place with a time of 2:13.62.
McCrarey placed second in the shot put with 12 pounds with a distance of 29.2 while sophomore Ben Franklin placed third with a distance of 28.8 and junior Adam Howerton threw a distance of 24.11. In the women’s javelin with 600 grams, Cleman placed fourth wit ha distance of 47.8. In the men’s javelin with 800 grams, sophomore Ben Franklin took second place with a distance of 95 10.5 while junior Barry Pentz took fourth with a distance of 66 4.5 and Howerton threw a distance of 44.5.
In the men’s high jump, freshman C.J. Matthews took third place with a distance of 5.4. Scott took third place in the women’s high jump with a distance of 4.2. Finally, in the long jump, Matthews took third place with a distance of 16 6.5.
On Saturday, March 21, the track team competed in Oroville where the men’s team took 12th place out of 15 schools and the women’s team took 11th place out of 13 schools.
“I was pleased with how everyone competed at their first big meet of the year,” Thornton said. “[Spear] moved up to the 1600 for the first time in high school and ran a good, smart race, placing third. [Johnson] competed well in her first 800. I knew [Martinez] could run the hurdles but was very pleasantly surprised with how well she did in the shot put. [Kilpatrick and Scott] did very well in the high jump.”
Cleman placed 25th in the women’s 200 meters with a time of 33.76 while freshman Lisa Ortega placed 26th with a time of 33.83. In the 400 meters, senior Veronica Puente placed 11th with a time of 73.82. Johnson finished the 800 meters at 3:00. Spear finished the 1600 meter in third place with a time of 6:16.58.
In the 100 meter hurdles at 33 inches, Ortega finished in eighth place at 21.23 while Martinez finished in 13th at 22.56 and Scott finished in 15th place at 25.07. The women’s four by 100 relay team, Ortega, Scott, Wilson and Martinez, finished in eight place at 62.37. The women’s four by 400 relay team, Kilpatrick, Spear, Johnson and Puente finished in seventh place at 5:05.00.
Martinez placed sixth in the four kilogram shot put with a distance of 27-04.00. Johnson placed 21st in the one kilogram discus with a distance of 49-06 and in the 600 gram javelin, Cleman placed 21st with a distance of 40-00.
In the women’s high jump, Kilpatrick took sixth place at 4-02.00 and Scott took eight at 4-00.00.
“For the boys, [Halvorsen] continues to show he can run with the best in the 1600 and the 3200,” Thornton said. “[Matthews] proved his jumping ability by placing very well in the pole vault, high jump and the triple jump.”
In the men’s 100 meters, Sauer took seventh place with a time of 12.63 while Franklin took 35th with a time of 15.54. In the 200 meters, Howerton took 20th with a time of 33.97. In the men’s 1600 meters, Halvorsen finished at 5:23, McCrarey finished at 5:38, Podkranic finished at 5:45 and Hickman finished at 5:50.
In the men’s 3200 meters, Halvorsen took fourth place at 11:27.62. In the men’s 300 meters with 36 inch hurdles, Podkranic took seventh place at 60.74. The men’s four by 400 relay, Sauer, McCrarey, Hickman and Halvorsen, took eighth place with a time of 4:17.58.
McCrarey took 21st place in the men’s 12 pound shot put with a distance of 26-09.50 while Franklin took 24 place with a distance of 26-01.00, junior Barry Pentz took 27th place with a time of 24-11.50 and Howerton took 28th place with a time of 24-04.00.
In the 1.6 kilogram discus, Franklin took 19th place with a distance of 68-00, Howerton took 23rd place with a distance of 63-07 and Pentz took 35th place with a distance of 52-04. In the 800 gram javelin, Franklin took 24th place with 85-00, Pentz finished in 30th with 67-01 and Howerton finished in 37th place at 49-11.
In the men’s high jump, Matthews took seventh at 5-02.00. Matthews also took third in the pole vault at 9-00.00 and seventh in the triple jump at 33-05.00
As of press time, the track team had not yet competed at the Eastmont junior varsity invite on Tuesday, March 24. The team will next compete in the Ray Cross Invite at Ephrata High School on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
