TONASKET – Several Tonasket tennis players are headed to the district matches next week after their last two regular season matches last week.
On Thursday, May 7, Tonasket played at Omak where the boys’ team lost 2-3 and the girls’ team lost 0-5.
For the boys, Brett Hendrick and Damon Sprague played as the number one doubles team, defeated Kyle Thornton and Zach Day 6-0, 7-5. Chris Martini and Anthony Verhasselt played as the number two doubles team, defeating Dillon Dorston and Hoah Braley 6-1, 6-2.
On Friday, May 8, the Tigers played in their last regular season match at home against Lake Roosevelt where the boys’ team won 5-0 while the girls’ team lost 1-4.
For the boys’ singles players, Hendrick defeated Peter Rise, 6-0, 6-1, Lee Leavell defeated John Berry 6-0, 6-2 and Vasyl Sheppella defeated Bill Passmore 6-2, 6-3. The number one boys’ doubles team, Karl Bharucha and Sprague, defeated Sterling Shephard and Andrew Morton 6-0, 6-0 while the number two boys’ doubles team, Verhasselt and Martini defeated Phoenix Shephard and Nick Rice 6-3, 6-3.
The girls’ number one doubles team, Jolynn Sullivan and Melissa Martinez, defeated Mo Bell-Bart and Monica Warriors 6-3, 6-4.
“I will have two boys singles entries and three boys doubles entries into the district tournament,” Laura Temby, head coach, said.
Hendrick and Leavell will be the singles players while Bharucha and Sprague will be the number one doubles team, Verhasselt and Martini will be the number two doubles team and Aaron Bharucha and Lucas Detillian will be the number three doubles team.
“I will have two girls’ doubles teams in the tournament,” Temby said. Those teams are Sullivan with Martinez and Ashlyn Salzman with Natasha Vargas.
“Districts are held over two weekends, May 16 and May 23, both at Cashmere,” Temby said. “There will be single elimination until the top eight and then double elimination. I am hopeful to get all of my top kids into the second weekend of the tournament and maybe even three entries into the state tournament.”
