CASHMERE – After a win over Brewster earlier in the week, the Tonasket girls’ soccer team fell to Cascade and Cashmere on the road.
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, The Tigers beat the Brewster Bears 2-1 in home victory head coach Darren Collins said the team needed.
“The team hadn’t beat Brewster in a good few years so it was definitely a good confidence booster,” Collins said. “That was a good game to watch. I think the team did good playing against the aggressive Brewster team. They didn’t start trying to play like Brewster was, they just kept passing and moving the ball with our forwards.”
Both Tonasket points, one from a penalty kick and another on a fast break away, were scored by freshman Kelly Cruz.
“We were pretty even with Brewster and it was pretty tough,” Cruz said. “Our team played pretty hard. I’m pretty sure without assists I wouldn’t be making goals so I’m thankful to the team. It was kind of hard to play against Brewster. There were always three people ganging up on me, but as long as there are three on me, I know there’s somebody available on my team.”
On Thursday, Sept. 24, Tonasket traveled to Cascade where they lost 6-0.
“Cascade’s pretty good,” Collins said. “I think they’re able to pull from a pretty big area for talent. Our girls played tough and played a good game. Cascade had eight seniors on the team so they had a lot of experience.”
Finally, on Saturday, Sept. 26, the Tigers lost in Cashmere 10-0.
“Cashmere’s been beating up on everyone like that,” Collins said. “I think they beat Omak by about the same.”
Collins added that the Cascade and Cashmere games were both really tough games for the team but that the girls aren’t letting the losses get them down.
“They know that losing can happen,” he said. “They keep their heads up and stay focused on the next game.”
As of press time, the Tigers (1-4-0, 3-4-1) had not yet played at home against Okanogan. Their next game is on Thursday, Oct. 1 away against Liberty Bell at 4 p.m. After the weekend off, they will play at home against Cascade on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
