Oroville and Tonasket boys' and girls' track teams finish in top 10 at Tona

TONASKET – The Oroville and Tonasket boys’ and girls’ track teams finished in the top ten during the Tonasket Invitational track and field meet on Friday, April 17.

The Oroville women’s team finished in fourth place with 72 points and the Tonasket women’s team in fifth place with 68.5 points while the Tonasket men’s team finished in sixth place with 45 points and the Oroville men’s team finished in eighth place with 31 points.

“This was a great team effort and showed that we are able to compete as one of the best teams in our district,” Oroville Head Coach Harold Jensen said.

In the women’s 100 meters race, Oroville junior Kayla McKinney finished in seventh place with a time of 14.20, Tonasket freshman Amber Kilpatrick finished in 16th place with a time of 15.03 and Tonasket freshman Emmy Hickman finished in 24th place at 16.85. In the men’s 100 meters race, Tonasket sophomore Kellen Sauer finished in sixth place at 12.22, Tonasket junior Terrell Cross finished in 15th place at 12.91, Oroville freshman Michael Lynch finished in 17th place at 13.15 and Tonasket sophomore Trevor Jensen came in 19th place at 13.35.

In the women’s 200 meters race, Tonasket sophomore Elizabeth Cleman came in 11th place at 32.40 and Hickman came in 14th at 35.90. In the men’s 200 meters race, Jensen finished in 15th place at 28.30 with Tonasket junior Barry Pentz right behind him in 16th place at 29.53.

In the women’s 400 meters race, Tonasket seniors Christina Ortiz and Veronica Puente came in sixth and seventh places respectively with times of 1:10.46 and 1:13.82. In the men’s 400 meters race, Sauer came in fifth place at 57.61 while Tonasket junior Tomas Stefaniak came in 18th place at 1:05.13.

“Ortiz set a new personal record in the 400,” Tonasket Head Coach Bob Thornton said. “Jensen set new personal records in the 100 and 200. Sauer had a personal record in the 100.”

In the women’s 800 meters race, Tonasket sophomore Jessica Spear came in first place at 2:53.63 while Tonasket freshman Amy Johnson came in ninth place at 2:53.72. In the men’s 800 meters race, Stefaniak came in 16th place at 2:45.15.

In the women’s 1600 meters race, Spear came in first at 5:56.80, Tonasket sophomore Michelle Carlson came in fourth place at 6:20.12 and Johnson came in fifth place at 6:25.52. In the men’s 1600 meters race, Tonasket freshman Damon Halvorsen came in sixth place at 5:09.86, Tonasket junior Corey McCrarey came in tenth plae at 5:21.67 and Tonasket freshman Jake Hickman came in 14th place at 5:25.34.

“Spear set season best times in the 800 and 1600,” Thornton said. “Carlson and Johnson also set personal records in the 1600. J. Hickman also had a personal record in the 1600.”

In the women’s 3200 meters race, Puente came in first at 14:05.40. In the men’s 3200 meters race, Halvorsen came in fourth at 10:56.64 and McCrarey came in seventh at 11:28.52.

“Puente won the 3200 in a great race,” Thornton said. “Halvorsen and McCrarey set new personal records in the 1600 and the 3200.”

In the women’s 100 meter 33 inch hurdles, Tonasket senior Teriqua Cholmondelely came in first with a time of 19.24, Tonasket freshman Vanessa Martinez came in seventh at 20.64 and Oroville freshman Fernanda Perez came in tenth at 23.13. In the men’s 110 meter 39 inch hurdles, Oroville junior Blaine Wagner came in first at 17.55. In the women’s 300 meter 30 inch hurdles, Oroville junior Rachel Peters came in first at 51.53 while Cholmondelely came in sixth at 59.81. In the men’s 300 meter 36 inch hurdles, Tonasket junior Spencer Podkranic came in second at 47.34 while Wagner came in third at 49.01.

“Cholmondelely and Martinez set season bests in the 100 hurdles,” Thornton said. “Podkranic set a personal record in the 300 hurdles.”

In the women’s 4×100 relay, the Tonasket team, E. Hickman, Amber Kilpatrick, Brandi Wilson and Martinez, came in sixth place at 1:00.64 while the Oroville team, Janaya Kalista, Katie Smith, Heather Galvin and Perez came in seventh place at 1:04.71. In the women’s 4×200 relay, the Oroville team, Madi Hatch, Naomi Peters, Austianna Quick and Kayla McKinney came in fourth place at 2:02.04. In the men’s 4×400 relay race, the Tonasket team, Halvorsen, Jensen, McCrarey and Podkranic, came in sixth place at 4:07.81. R. Peters, McKinney, Quick and N. Peters took fourth place in the women’s 4×400 relay race at 4:39.75.

In the men’s 12 pound shot put, Cross took 25th place with a throw of 26-11.00 and Tonasket junior Adam Howerton tied with Tonasket sophomore Ben Franklin for 28th place with a throw of 24-07.00. In the women’s four kilogram shot put, Oroville sophomore Angel Carrera took fifth place with a throw of 28-01.00, Oroville freshman Kelsey Hughes took sixth place with a throw of 27-11.00, Tonasket freshman Shelby Scott took 12th place with a throw of 22-05.00 and Oroville freshman Terra Mullikin took 16th place with a throw of 18-03.00.

“Scott set a personal record in the shot put,” Thornton said. “Cross had a personal record in the shot put and the 100.”

In the men’s 1.6 kilogram discus, Oroville freshman Caleb Haney took third place with a throw of 105-01, Howerton took 16th place with a throw of 73-07 and Pentz took 17th place with a throw of 73-01. In the women’s one kilogram discus, Hughes took third place with a throw of 81-03, Carrera took fifth with a throw of 65-06, Mullikin took 10th place with a throw of 52-01 and Johnson took 21st place with a score of 37-06.

“Howerton had a personal record in the discuss,” Thornton said. “Pentz had a personal record in the discus and javelin.”

In the women’s 600 gram javelin, McKinney took fifth place with a throw of 86-07, Cleman took 11th place with a throw of 67-11 and Smith took 18th place with a throw of 49-01. In the men’s 800 gram javelin, Podkranic took 11th place with a throw of 104-10, Oroville freshman Richard Milholland took 12th place with a throw of 102-04, Pentz took 15th place with a throw of 92-07 and Franklin took 18th place with a throw of 89-09.

In the women’s high jump, Quick too third place with a jump of 4-04.50, Kilpatrick took fifth place with a jump of 4-04.25, Scott tied for seventh place with a jump of 4-02.00, Carlson took tenth place with a jump of 3-10.00 and Smith took 11th place with a jump of 3-08.00. In the men’s high jump, Tonasket freshman CJ Mathews took sixth place with a jump of 5-02.25 and Tonasket freshman John Stedtfeld tied for tenth with Cross with a jump of 4-10.00.

In the women’s pole vault, Oroville senior Brisa Maldonado took second place with a jump of 6-06.00. In the men’s pole vault, Mathews took first with a jump of 9-00.00 and Lynch took second place with a jump of 8-06.00.

Perez took 19th place in the women’s long jump with a jump of 10-03.00 and Stedtfeld took 11th place in the men’s long jump with a jump of 16-07.50. In the triple jump, R. Peters took first place with a jump of 30-07.50 and Galvin took seventh place with a jump of 25-07.00. Finally, in the men’s triple jump, Mathews took fifth place with a jump of 36-08.00.

“Mathews had a three foot personal record in the triple jump,” Thornton said.

As of press time, Tonasket had not yet competed in the Chelan League Meet
on Tuesday, April 21. The Tigers’ next track and field meet is on Saturday, April 25 at the Riverside Invitational.

“We will also be stronger when N. Peters and Kalista are back from sprained ankles,” H. Jensen said. “This Tuesday, Oroville travels to Mansfield for their invite and Saturday to Riverside for a huge invitational with most of the Spokane and area schools participating.”
