Tonasket Tigers wrestling beats Lake Roosevelt 45-27

COULEE DAM – The Tonasket boys wrestling team beat the Lake Roosevelt team 45-27 on Thursday, Jan. 15.

“We only had six matches that actually wrestled and we won five of them,” Dave Mitchell, head coach, said. “The forfeits were kind of even. We forfeited four and Lake Roosevelt did three.”

At 140 pounds, Lee Leavell won his match in a second period pin. Dustin Silverthorn won his match at 152 pounds by decision 12-5. In a first period pin, Kevin Cruz won his match at 160 pounds. Keegan McCormick won his match at 171 pounds in a second period pin. Brandon Hudson, in a first period pin, won his match at 215 pounds. Riley Buzzard, at 125 pounds, lost by decision, 8-1.

Mitchell said he thought Cruz’s match would be closer, because his opponent wrestled at state last season.

“I thought that it’d be a closer match, but [Cruz] went out there and pinned him in the first period, he just dominated him,” he said.

Mitchell said he thinks the team has done well so far this season.

“We’ve got a real hard working, good bunch of guys,” he said. “We just don’t have very many of them. The guys we have are awesome; they work real hard and I’m really happy with them.”

The Tigers (3-1 in dual matches) will wrestle Okanogan home tonight at 7 p.m. Then, tomorrow, the team travels down to Cashmere where they’ll also wrestle Cascade in a make-up match. Mitchell said Okanogan has even more forfeits than Lake Roosevelt and that Cascade is similar to Lake Roosevelt as well, but that Cashmere is a solid team.
