EAST WENATCHEE – The Oroville Hornets traveled to the District 6 Track and Field meet at Eastmont on Saturday, May 21 and the girls team brought home the District Championship.

From this meet the top four places in the girls and top three places from the boys in all events move on to the State Championships being held this Friday and Saturday at Roos Stadium on the campus of EWU in Cheney, according to Hornet Coach Harold Jensen.

“The very first event at the District Meet was the girls 800 relay where our girls were seeded in Seventh place. The relay qualified in third place with Brittany Jewett, Fernanda Perez, Selena Bobadilla and Kaitlyn Grunst,” said Jenson, about the District meet. “This excited both the athletes and parents and from this point we just exploded. The Oroville girls then dominated the meet with 15 teams and won the District Championship by a huge margin.”

For the third consecutive week Emily Mills lit them up in the 100, 200, and 400, said Jensen. Callie Barker won the pole vault and Kelsey Hughes won the javelin, was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Grunst tied for second in the high jump and Sierra Speiker was second in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters and was a member of the qualifying 1600 relay with Mills, Naomi Peters and Barker. Catie Arrigoni qualified for state in three events, the 1600 and 3200 meters and the High Jump. Madi Hatch tied a personal record and qualified in the pole vault in fourth place.

On the boys’ side, Caleb Haney won the discus and Preston Iverson won the 400, finished second in the 200 and was a member of the state qualifying third place 400 relay team with Tanner Smith, Luke Kindred and Connelly Quick.

A total of 11 girls and five boys will be going to the State in 21 events.
