Oroville Football has season opener against Triple A Kelowna team

KELOWNA, B.C. – The mighty Hornets faced off against a much larger Kelowna, B.C. team to warm up for their 2010 season and lost 53 to 7.

“Kelowna, a AAA school of 1600 students grades ten, eleven and twelve, was big and fast with a QB who runs the 40 in 4.4 seconds and has been heavily recruited by Division I schools. They were simply more than we could handle,” said Hornet Coach Tam Hutchinson.

The Hornets played hard with the offense gaining yards and moving the ball, but defensively they were overmatched.

Hornet Nicky Perez had 84 yards rushing and Preston Iverson added another 36. CJ Mathews gained 24 from scrimmage and had 58 yards in kickoff returns, including one for 27 yards. Mathews also had three receptions for 17 yards.

Jose Velasco led all tacklers with four primaries, while freshman linebacker Jacob Kellogg had three primaries.

“Kelowna is said to be the powerhouse of the province and they have been practicing since May. Canadian spectators watching the game were impressed with the Oroville team and the way we played,” said Coach Hutchinson.

Oroville takes on Republic this Friday there in an eight Man game that starts at 7 pm.
