Memorial Day ceremonies in Tonasket and Oroville this Monday

NORTH COUNTY – Memorial Day Ceremonies are planned by the Tonasket and Oroville American Legion Posts this coming Monday morning.
The annual Tonasket American Legion Memorial Day ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 30 on Fourth Street Bridge. After a ceremony on the bridge, which will include a speech, bugle playing and the dropping of flowers into the Okanogan River, the ceremony will move to the Tonasket Cemetery.
Once finished at the cemetery, around 11 a.m., the Legion will have a small parade down Fourth Street and right onto Whitcomb Ave. to go the Legacy Park on the south end of town, where the ceremony will conclude.
In Oroville, Hodges American Legion Post #84 plans a ceremony starting at 10 a.m. at Oroville’s Riverview Cemetery and includes a color guard made up of members of both the American and Canadian Legion. Wreaths will be laid at Hodges’ grave and that of a Canadian veteran that is laid to rest at Riverview. Following the ceremony a wreath will be tossed in the Similkameen River at the 12th Street Bridge. The wreath commemorates all the sailors in the Navy, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines that have served the nation.
“On the Saturday before Memorial Day members of the American Legion and scouts from Boy Scout Troop 26 and Cub Scout Pack 23 will help to place flags on the more than 400 graves of veterans in Riverview Cemetery,” said Vicki Hart, with Hodges Post 84.
