There were 37 kids and almost 20 parents on hand to fish in the American Legion Post Fishing Derby June 10 at Round Lake.

AENEAS VALLELY – The Tonasket American Legion held a fishing derby for local children last week at Round Lake.

Almost 40 kids came, according to Post Commander Mayer. The kids caught a total of 60 rainbow trout, ranging from five ounces to two pounds, one ounce.

The tournament has been going on for more than ten years, Mayer said. Sons of the American Legion normally organizes it and this year the Legion helped out.

About 14 members of the Legion and 20 parents were on hand to help the kids fish, he said.

“The weather was cold and windy but you would never have known it by the excitement generated by the kids fishing,” he wrote in an email.

According to Mayer, sponsors included: Midway Building Supply, Hedlund Chevrolet, Appleway Valley Machinery, Tonasket Eagles, Tonasket American Legion members, Lee Franks, Princes, Subway, Home Depot, Tonasket Saloon, Tonasket Pizza Company, Grants Market, Al’s IGA, The Junction, Exxon, Beemans, Shannons, II Sisters, Wilbur-Ellis, Les Schwab-Oroville and Flying B-Oroville. Many individuals in Tonasket also contributed prizes, he said.

“A great time was had by all – the kids and the adults – after all, the derby is for the kids – young and old,” Mayer said.

The Legion held a rifle training course earlier this year. No other major activities are planned for the summer, Mayer said.
