State wrestling Day 1 summary | updated

Tonasket’s Jeffrey Stedtfeld (above) and Austin Booker advanced to the 1A state semifinals, while Collin Aitcheson and Jorge Juarez, along with Oroville’s Jordan Smith in 1B/2B, reached the medal rounds to highlight Day 1 action at Mat Classic XXV at the Tacoma Dome.

TACOMA – Here’s the run-down of how local wrestlers have fared on the first day of state tournament action. Tonasket had four of its five wrestlers survive the first day of the tournament, with two – Jeff Stedtfeld and Austin Booker – advancing to the semifinals. Jordan Smith of Oroville also advanced to the second day of competition. 

Tonasket

Collin Aitcheson (120) pinned A.J. Eversaul of Eatonville at 1:45 if their opening match. Two-time champion Joshua Salcedo of Granger pinned Aitcheson in the quarterfinal match, but Aitcheson assured himself of a medal by beating Gage Lott of Blaine, 8-1. He takes on Carson Horton on Saturday morning for the right to wrestle in a consolation medal round match.

Jorge Juarez (126) lost a wild 14-13 decision to Adrian Morales of Granger in a match that had four lead changes in the third period. He bounced back with an 8-2 victory over Javier Contreras of Forks and a second period pin of Corbin Sutherland of Ilwaco. Juarez opens the medal rounds on Saturday against Warden’s Ramses Rodelo.

Jeff Stedtfeld (126) defeated Ramses Rodelo of Warden 13-6, taking control after falling behind in the first period. Stedtfeld defeated Blaine’s Anthony Frey 15-5 in the quarterfinals and draws Cascade Christian’s Josh Crager in Saturday morning’s state 1A semifinal.

Austin Booker (160) won a tough 8-3 decision over Tom Odneal of Ilwaco and held off Royal’s Emilio Bustos in the quarterfinals. Booker takes on LaCenter’s Gabe Bunker, who has been dominant thus far, in Saturday’s semifinal.

John Rawley (195) was pinned in the second round at 3:03 by Zach Wardle of Woodland. His tournament came to and end when he was pinned in the second round of his consolation match by Ruvim Tyutyunnik of Riverview.

Oroville

Jordan Smith (106 lbs) lost to Josh Nocis of Adna, 15-1 but advanced to the medal rounds with a third period pin of Austin Boyes of South Bend. He’ll face Selkirk’s Tristan Chantry in a consolation semifinal match on Saturday morning.
