While not everyone goes home with the crown, well none of the girls who seek the title of Oroville May Festival Queen do on Selection Night, only three are selected as May Day Royalty – the queen and her court of two princesses.

Editorial Gary MugThis year’s queen is Narya Naillon and Zoe Jameson-Whittaker and Lena Fuchs will be princesses. They will represent Oroville well – so would have any of the girls, including Bonnie Roley and Pie Todd. It’s too bad we don’t have a queen and four princesses – but I understand the reasoning if we have seven contestants would we have a queen and six princesses – where do we draw the line.

Each of the girls did a great job on Selection Night and can be proud they got up in front of an audience and tried to represent Oroville this May Festival and throughout the event season in our community and elsewhere. Addressing an audience of people, especially when you know you’re being judged, couldn’t have been easy. It certainly isn’t one of my favorite things to do.

Each candidate and their parents also sign a contract with strict guidelines and obligations that must be met to serve as May Festival Royalty. This might mean having to give up on other activities while representing the community, but the commitment means we will get the best representatives of our town while they reign as royalty.

Selection night went well and Brad Scott did a good job serving as emcee, something I’m told I did one year – I must have blocked it out, that standing in front of an audience thing. The young Michael Oaks is always entertaining with his magic tricks and Aya’s singing voice is always welcome.

Again, good luck to Narya, Zoe and Lena, we know you’ll do your best and do the town proud as you serve as our royalty. And, good luck to Bonnie and Pie, we know that you too will continue to be great representatives of the town.
