Native Spanish speakers receive educational opportunities

TONASKET – The CONEVyT program, for native Spanish-speakers struggling to learn English, began again Jan. 7 at a portable on Tonasket School District grounds.

CONEVyT (pronounced Cone-aye-Veet) is a Spanish acronym for Mexico’s Consejo Nacional de Educación para la Vida y el Trabajo (the National Council for Education for Life and Work). It is a national program designed by the Mexican government to help educate people in Spanish first, before moving them into an English program, said program director Martha Bosch.

Tonasket Middle School team “Green Edge” competes in FIRST Lego League

TONASKET – Green energy is more then a campaign idea to five Tonasket students.

For them, green energy is fun, exciting – even educational.

“Green Edge,” a team from Tonasket Middle School, has spent the last month and half – or so – putting together a green robot and designing a green house for FIRST Lego League (FLL).

Tonasket students honor veterans with special assembly

TONASKET – Local veterans turned out for the Tonasket High School Veteran’s Day Assembly Nov. 9. About a dozen veterans attended the morning event, with a packed house of middle and high school students, community members and other visitors.

Several local veterans were honored during the assembly for their service, and some chose to speak. They were later presented with roses by students.

Local family legacy honored at WWU

On Oct. 26 the Hickenbottom family was presented with the Legacy Family of the Year Award by the Western Washington University Alumni Association. Adding to the honor is the fact that this is the first time the association has given such an award. The Hickenbottoms were chosen by their peers in the WWU Alumni Association to be “distinguished and deserving of recognition at the highest level.”
