Edna Hazel Howe

Born Sept. 24, 1924. A previous resident of the Oroville/Tonasket area for many years passed away peacefully Feb. 4, 2008 in Mount Vernon, Wash.

She is survived by her daughters, Anna Marie Applebee, of Oroville and Bonnie Schulz of Camano Island; sons, Dennis Rollins of Carmel, Bob Howe of Oroville, Kenneth Howe of Bothell. She has nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. She will be missed by all.

Sylvia Gay Brazle

Sylvia Gay Brazle entered eternal life on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008 at home on the ranch.

Gay was born on March 3, 1935 in Midway, Arkansas to parents O.M. and Bess Miller. Gay grew up in Arkansas and graduated from Paris High School. She came to Oroville in the early 1950′s working at Palmer-Nelson Hardware. On Nov. 19, 1954 she married Dean Brazle in Oroville. Gay worked in the local apple warehouses and also, along with her husband, owned grocery stores in the Loomis and Oroville area.

David Leo Peterson

David Leo Peterson was born in Tonasket, the known center of the universe, on Dec. 31, 1944 to Joy and Leo Peterson, loving parents who gave him a safe early life.

Elisabeth (Betty) Grote

Elisabeth L. Grote passed away suddenly on Dec. 30, 2007 in Lawton, Okla.

Betty, as everyone knew her, was born on July 17, 1935 in Rheinberg, Germany and grew up in Hanau, Germany during World War II. Betty came to the United States shortly after her marriage to James K. Grote on Dec. 24, 1956 (James passed away April 7, 2006). Betty later became a United States citizen in 1961.

Susan Banthony Wagenman Appel

Susan Banthony Wagenman Appel picked up her wings on Jan. 31, 2008. Susan Wagenman was born April 28, 1915 to parents Alpheus and Amy Wagenman.

She came to Wenatchee by train in 1935 at the age of 20 from Williston, North Dakota. She worked at the Owl Drug Store in Wenatchee where she met Howard Appel in 1936. They were married Sept. 1936. Their first son, Lawrence Appel, died at birth. Their second son, King David Appel, was born in Wenatchee and then the family moved to Tonasket in 1940 where Judy, Janice, John, Chet, Goldie and Delicia were born.

Emalie (Yusi) Scott

Emalie (Yusi) Scott, Tonasket, passed away on Jan. 25, 2008 following a courageous seven year battle with cancer.

Emalie was born on May 24, 1943 in Okanogan to Otto and Francis Yusi. She grew up and graduated in Okanogan with the Class of 1961. In 1962 she married her high school sweetheart, Fred Scott. They lived on the coast until 1964, when they came back and settled in Tonasket.

Lawrence (Larry) Edward Rise

On the morning of Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, Larry went to meet the Lord, passing away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Sharon; sons: Matthew, Trevor and Jason and their wives; daughter, Leslie; nine grandchildren; three sisters: Elva Helm, Karen Cockle and Marilyn (Becky) Cross and two brothers: Alfred Rise and Ralph Rise.

‘B.J.’ Jean VanDyck

‘B.J.’ Jean VanDyck, 68, Oroville, died on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at the North Valley Hospital in Tonasket.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1939 in Oklahoma City, Okla. B.J. moved to the Okanogan Valley in June of 2002 after a long and happy life of homes between here and California, including 17 years on a tug boat at 2nd Mate in Anacortes, Wash. Jean was first and foremost a wife and mother of her seven children plus adopted ones, as well as a foster parent in her last years of her life. Her hobbies included making dolls and home renovation.

Jesse Leighton

Jesse Leighton, 58, Oroville, passed away Jan. 2, 2008 in Wenatchee. He was born in Tacoma, Wash. to parents John and Bonnie on Dec. 27, 1949.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Oroville; his children: Stacy, John III, Scott and Amanda; five grandchildren: Ryan, Connor, Tyler, Kimberly and Brandon; two brothers, two sisters, his Aunt Marilyn and three cousins: Mike, Greg and Keith.

Gary Brotherton

Gary Brotherton, 58, Omak, died Jan. 2, 2008 at the Mid-Valley Hospital in Omak.

Gary was born Oct. 26, 1949 to William and Betty Brotherton of Albany, Ore.
